Co-founders Owliya Dima and her daughter Meymuna Hussein-Cattan settled in Southern California as refugees from Ethiopia in 1984. While learning to address the myriad challenges of resettlement, Owliya became inspired to help others navigate these complex systems. In 1999, Owliya began devoting her efforts as a volunteer, assisting newcomers to the United States in their efforts to find housing and work, learn English, and establish safe and stable homes for themselves and their families. In 2010, these efforts culminated in the formation of Tiyya - a responsive organization with a strong core of leaders, volunteers, and partnerships providing assistance and accommodation to both individual refugees and families in Orange and Los Angeles counties.
Tiyya serves more than 250 families annually in Orange and Los Angeles counties through various programs designed to support refugee children and their families. Our volunteer program helps us to connect clients with community members, so they can build networks and create sustainable, long-term community ties organically through establishing meaningful relationships.
